Summary
Twelve-Layer Slate was an experimental demonstration in which researchers stacked thin engraved stone plates and confirmed that mana could pass between layers through aligned transition marks.
The event became an early precursor to layered magic circles and mana interlocks. It helped prove that a spell definition did not need to exist on a single flat surface.
Event Description
The research team was attempting to reduce the floor space required for medium-complexity circles. Conventional circles were becoming too large for small laboratories, medical rooms, and field shelters. Dwarven slate cutters proposed engraving parts of the formula onto separate thin plates and stacking them with alignment pins.
The first eleven tests failed or produced only surface glow.
The twelfth configuration used small repeated transition marks placed at identical positions on each slate. When the intake line was activated, mana moved through the upper circle, paused at the transition marks, and continued into the lower layers.
